Who they are
Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100–170) was an astronomer, mathematician, and geographer active at Alexandria under Roman rule, whose chief work the Almagest systematically ordered and synthesized all the earlier achievements of ancient Greek astronomy, building a complete geocentric cosmology in which the earth is the center of the universe and the sun, moon, and stars all move in uniform circular motion around the earth (aided by a complex "epicycle-deferent" geometric model to explain observational anomalies such as planetary retrogradation); this theoretical system, though fundamentally mistaken by today’s view, with its powerful mathematical predictive power remained for about fourteen hundred years the acknowledged authoritative theoretical framework of the Islamic world and European astronomy, until it was gradually replaced by Copernicus’s heliocentrism in the sixteenth century. His Geography systematically ordered the geographical coordinate information of the known world of the time and systematically introduced the method of marking geographical position by a grid of longitude and latitude, a geographical methodology that thereafter profoundly shaped the cartographic practice of medieval Islamic geographers including al-Idrisi.

The Ingenious Design of the "Epicycle-Deferent" Model
To explain the occasional "retrograde motion" in the paths of the planets (the observed phenomenon of a planet briefly moving in reverse against the background stars), Ptolemy designed an exceedingly ingenious and complex geometric model: the planet itself moves along a smaller circular orbit (the epicycle), while the center of the epicycle moves along a larger circular orbit centered on the earth (the deferent), and by adjusting the relative speeds and radius ratios of epicycle and deferent this model could quite precisely predict the apparent position of the planets in the sky, though its theoretical premise (geocentrism) was fundamentally wrong.
The Founding of Cartography by Longitude and Latitude
In the Geography Ptolemy systematically ordered the geographical coordinates of some eight thousand places and, for the first time, systematically proposed the methodology of marking geographical position by a grid coordinate system of longitude and latitude, a methodology thereafter inherited and developed by geographers of the Arab world such as al-Idrisi and at last evolving into the basic coordinate system indispensable to modern cartography.
Version differences
Though Ptolemy’s geocentric system is fundamentally mistaken by today’s view, his "epicycle-deferent" geometric model had a considerable practical precision in predicting the apparent positions of the planets, which is an important reason this erroneous theory could hold scholarly authority for nearly fourteen hundred years, and modern history of science often takes this case to discuss the complex relation between "practical effectiveness" and "theoretical correctness."
