The Door That Was Shut
Zheng He’s treasure fleet was unprecedented in scale, displaying China’s unmatched strength and navigational skill of the time. Yet soon after him, out of fiscal, security, and "stress agriculture, suppress commerce" considerations, the Ming stopped the voyages, strictly enforced the sea ban, and even destroyed some navigational records. Decades later, when the small fleets of Portugal and Spain set sail to open global routes and launch the Age of Discovery, China — already ahead — voluntarily withdrew from the race. History took a telling turn here.
