Who they are

A pseudonym. In 2008 this person (or team) published the Bitcoin white paper, and the following year launched the Bitcoin network, creating the first truly decentralized digital currency in human history — one that depends on no bank or government, using an ingenious blend of cryptography and "blockchain" technology to let strangers who do not trust one another transfer value directly and securely, with the total supply permanently capped at twenty-one million coins. Bitcoin’s birth was a fundamental challenge to the millennia-old common sense that "money must be issued by the state," and set off the wave of cryptocurrency and blockchain. Satoshi himself, having left this system behind, quietly withdrew, and his true identity remains unknown to this day.

Key stories

An Inventor Who Erased His Own Name

Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin and is believed to hold as many as a million coins (worth an astronomical sum today), yet vanished completely around 2011, and those coins have never been touched. He never showed his face, never accepted an award, never cashed in the fortune — leaving behind only a self-running system and a riddle. This is nearly unique in modern history: a person invented something that might change the future of money, then deliberately erased his own existence. His very anonymity became the most thorough footnote to Bitcoin’s ideal of "decentralization, relying on no authority."

Version differences

Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity remains a mystery; many have been named or claimed the identity through history, none confirmed; this site states only the public technical contribution and passes no judgment on identity.
