Who they are

A Jewish banking dynasty originating in Frankfurt, Germany. The elder Rothschild sent his five sons to London, Paris, Vienna, Naples, and Frankfurt, building a family banking network that spanned Europe. On the strength of that network and financial and informational power rivaling that of states, they became the chief creditors of nineteenth-century European governments, financing wars and railways, and were for a time the richest family in the world. They pioneered many practices of modern cross-border finance, and — because of their hidden influence — became the object of countless later conspiracy theories. But strip away the legends, and their real legacy is this: they turned "finance" into a force that could cross borders and sway history.

The Rothschild family built an intelligence network — carrier pigeons, fast ships, dedicated couriers — that outpaced the governments of the day.
