Who they are

A man of Julu who founded the "Way of Great Peace," healing and preaching with talismanic water and incantations, until in a decade his followers grew to hundreds of thousands across eight provinces. In 184 he raised the cry "the Blue Heaven is dead, the Yellow Heaven shall rise; the year is jiazi, and the realm shall know great fortune," and his followers rose in arms wearing yellow turbans — the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Though put down within months, the rising gutted the rotting Eastern Han court, and local strongmen used the suppression to build private armies — raising the curtain directly on the age of contending lords and the Three Kingdoms.

Styling himself "Great Worthy and Good Teacher," Zhang Jiao gathered followers among the common people by healing and preaching, organized them by region into thirty-six "banners," and secretly set a common date to rise. When the rebellion broke out in 184, Yellow Turban armies rose everywhere at once, a mighty tide that the authorities could barely withstand, shaking the realm. It was the first large-scale, religiously organized peasant uprising in Chinese history, and the cry "the Yellow Heaven shall rise" was the signal of an age of chaos to come.

The Rebellion Quickly Crushed, an Age of Chaos Begun

A few months after the rising, Zhang Jiao himself died of illness, and Eastern Han generals like Huangfu Song broke the main Yellow Turban forces one after another, the rebellion largely put down within the year. But to quell it, the court permitted regions to raise their own troops — a decision that utterly changed history’s course: Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian all first came to prominence suppressing the Yellow Turbans, the Eastern Han’s central authority never recovered, and the age of contending warlords began.
