Who they are

A Daoist who preached and worked talismanic cures around Jiangdong in the late Eastern Han and won much popular favor; Sun Ce, holding that he beguiled the people and shook army morale, had him executed over all pleading. The novel then has Sun Ce repeatedly "see" Yu Ji’s ghost haunting him, until, sick with terror, his old wound reopened and he soon died — this eerie episode is one of the few clearly supernatural passages in the Romance, while the histories record Yu Ji’s death and its aftermath far more briefly.

Yu Ji was long renowned in Jiangdong, and at a banquet Sun Ce saw his civil and military officers rise one after another to salute the passing Yu Ji with more ceremony than they showed their own lord, and flew into a rage, deciding the man beguiled the people with sorcery and bought their hearts; over the pleading of his mother and his officers, he had Yu Ji beheaded before the assembly. The novel then describes Sun Ce seeing Yu Ji’s form again and again in mirror and water until, sick with terror, his old wound reopened and he died young — but the histories keep no firm record of this cause and effect, which is largely the novelist’s embellishment.
