Gaining the Imperial Seal, Rashly Declaring Himself Emperor
When Sun Ce rose in arms, he pawned the imperial seal to Yuan Shu to borrow troops, and so Yuan Shu came to hold the treasure that symbolized the Mandate of Heaven. His ambition swelling, he ignored all counsel and formally declared himself emperor at Shouchun in 197, naming his state "Zhongjia." The act made him instantly the enemy of the realm — Cao Cao, Lü Bu, and Sun Ce all broke with him and went to war. Far from crowning his power, declaring himself emperor lit the fuse of an assault on every side.
