The Bait of Goods at Yanjin
Wen Chou, avenging Yan Liang, led a pursuit of the Cao army, and Cao Cao, on Xun You’s advice, deliberately abandoned baggage carts and horses along the road to lure the enemy. Seeing the goods, Wen Chou’s men dismounted to scramble for them and their ranks fell into instant disorder; Cao Cao seized the moment to wheel his troops in counterattack, and Wen Chou’s army, caught unawares, was routed, Wen Chou himself dying in the melee — the key to this victory was Cao Cao’s exact reading of the enemy’s slack discipline.
