The Girdle Edict
As Cao Cao’s power grew and the court fell entirely under his sway, Emperor Xian secretly sewed an edict into a girdle and gave it to the imperial uncle Dong Cheng, ordering him to rally loyal ministers to kill Cao Cao. Liu Bei too was involved. When the plot was exposed, Cao Cao had Dong Cheng and the other conspirators executed with their whole families. It was one of the emperor’s few active strikes back, and it failed — after it, he had no power left to resist Cao Cao’s control.
