A Hand in the Wolf’s Jaws

Fenrir grew ever larger, and the gods forged a magic ribbon to bind it. The cunning wolf demanded that a god lay a hand in its mouth as surety before it would let itself be bound. The gods looked at one another, and only Tyr held out his right hand. The ribbon tightened, the wolf could not break free, and it bit down — Tyr lost his hand, but secured the gods’ one defense against the end of the world.
