Who they are

The all-round master of the Northern Song literary world — poetry, ci, prose, calligraphy, and painting all unrivaled in his day. His life was a string of demotions for his political views, banished from the splendid capital all the way to remote Huangzhou, Huizhou, and Danzhou, yet he always lived out a serene breadth in adversity — banished to Huangzhou, he opened up the eastern slope, styled himself "Dongpo the Recluse," and wrote the Red Cliff rhapsodies and "the great river flows east." Su Shi lived the Chinese literatus’s spirit of "settling oneself even in adversity" into a very model.

Key stories

"A Straw Cloak in the Misty Rain, a Whole Life at Ease"

Caught in rain on a journey, while his companions all scrambled for cover, Su Shi walked on at an easy pace, and afterward wrote: "Heed not the rain beating through the leaves; why not chant and stroll on slowly… a straw cloak in the misty rain, a whole life at ease." The rain cannot be dodged, so simply walk through it composed. The lines are about a small rain, but speak his stance toward a whole battered life — a breadth that made him a spiritual comfort to countless frustrated scholars ever after.
