A prophecy warned that the son of the wisdom-goddess Metis would surpass his father, so Zeus swallowed the pregnant Metis whole. Afterward his head split with pain; Hephaestus cleaved it open with an axe — and out leapt Athena, armored, spear in hand, giving a war cry.
When Perseus beheaded Medusa, she lent him a polished shield to use as a mirror; through the Twelve Labors of Heracles she repeatedly stepped in; through Odysseus’s ten years of wandering she argued his case in the councils of the gods. Spotting and investing in promising talent is her specialty.
The mortal weaver Arachne boasted her skill surpassed the goddess’s, and in the contest wove the scandals of the gods with flawless craft. Athena tore the cloth apart; Arachne hanged herself in shame, and the goddess turned her into a spider — forever weaving, forever suspended in the air.
