Goddess of Joy and Nurture
Hathor presides over all that is good in the mortal world: love, music, dance, wine, and childbirth. Her festivals of song, dance, and unrestrained drinking are among the happiest of Egyptian religious occasions. As the sky cow she nurses the gods and the pharaoh with her milk; as "Mistress of the West" she receives the dead at the place of sunset and leads them into the afterlife. The joy of life and the reception of death are no contradiction in her — she watches over the whole journey from birth to death.
