Who they are

A Post-Impressionist painter, born to nobility yet left short of stature and lame in both legs by a childhood bone disease. He plunged into the night world of Paris’s Montmartre, painting the dancers of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret singers, and streetwalkers — unflinching and full of sympathy. His color lithograph posters for the Moulin Rouge raised the commercial advertisement into an independent art, the very origin of modern graphic design and poster art.

Turning Advertising into Art

Moulin Rouge: La Goulue
Moulin Rouge: La Goulue · Toulouse-Lautrec, 1891

The posters Toulouse-Lautrec made for the Moulin Rouge — bold flat blocks of color, spare silhouettes, tilted compositions — are unforgettable at a glance. In his hands, the once-cheap commercial bill became, for the first time, a collector’s item. The advertising design and concert posters that fill our streets today all trace back to this short painter steeped in the Paris night.
